Giving FAQ's

Make a gift to either the General Scholarship Fund or Unrestricted Fund before June 25, 2020. Gifts can be made via credit card by clicking the “Give Now” button on this page, or via the “Give Now” menu tab at the top of the website.

In the event that you prefer to make a gift of cash, check, stock or by other method, please refer to the “Ways To Give” menu tab at the top of the website. To have your gift counted, the gift must arrive at the Office of Institutional Advancement on or before the end date of the drive – June 25, 2020.

The General Scholarship Fund provides immediate scholarship aid to students at Barton College. When a gift is made to this fund, it becomes available right then for allocation by the Office of Financial Aid. It is either used in the current academic year or put into reserve to be used the following academic year in support of the overall financial aid model at the College which ranges from $16-19 Million dollars at any giving time.

The Unrestricted Fund is often labeled as the area of support for “The Greatest Need on Campus”. This statement is true as dollars given to this fund can be allocated to any area on campus at the discretion of the President and Senior Staff. The flexibility provided by this fund allows the College to strategically invest in campus infrastructure, personnel, technology, academic and student support, and any other area of great need immediately without restriction. This fund is vital to the ongoing improvements to our campus and academic offerings.

Monthly giving is an optional method of supporting Barton College where a certain dollar amount set by the donor to a set fund is drafted each month on either the 1st or 15th of the month (donor preference).

To accomplish this, click “give now” from the menu options. Once you are on the giving page, input the dollar amount and area of designation that you prefer. Then click the “make this a recurring gift” check box and use the drop down box to select “monthly” and then whether you prefer the 1st or 15th of each month. Once the billing payment and address is finalized and you click donate, your monthly gift will be activated within the College’s system. You are not required to do anything else unless you wish to change or update your monthly plan. If you wish to designate a monthly gift to multiple areas, please repeat the above process for each designated gift.

The CARES Act created a temporary charitable tax deduction for cash donations of $300 per individual or $600 for joint filers. This deduction is only available to individuals who do not itemize their returns and claim the standard deduction ($12,400 for singles, $18,000 for head of household, $24,800 for married filing jointly). The inclusion of a universal charitable deduction may encourage those who do not itemize to continue their charitable giving in 2020.

For individuals who itemize, the cap on deductions taken for annual contributions has been lifted from 60% to 100% of AGI for cash gifts to public charities in 2020. Any excess can be carried forward for five (5) years. Gifts made to Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) do not qualify for the increased deduction.
