DESCRIPTION:Honors Faculty Lecture Series \nSemester Theme: Resistance \nFeatured speaker: Mark Basinger\, Ph.D. \nLearning Commons\, Hackney Library \nFor additional information\, contact Gerard Lange\, Director of the Whitehurst Family Honors Program\, at glange@barton.edu or 252-399-6475. \n  \nAbout Dr. Basinger: \nDr. Mark Basinger came to Barton College in 2000 from Southeast Missouri State University where he completed a one-year teaching appointment in the Department of Biology.  His previous research focused on vascular plant inventories of natural areas and study of flooding and windstorm damage\, along with short-term recovery\, in two old-growth forests in southern Illinois.  Basinger has over 15 years of summer work experience with the Shawnee National Forest and has done a wide variety of ecological and floristic projects for the forest service.  He is considered an expert on the vascular plants of the eastern United States.  He teaches many of the introductory biology\, botany/environmental science\, and field biology courses at Barton including Principles of Biology I and II; Organismal Biology; Non-Vascular and Vascular Plants\, and Exploring the North Carolina Coast\, Coastal Plain\, and Mountains.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in business management with a concentration in marketing from Stony Brook University in 2009 and her master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in information technology management from the University at Albany in 2011. She earned her master’s of sport science with a concentration in strength and conditioning from Hofstra University. She earned her Ph.D. in education with a concentration in kinesiology from George Mason University. She holds her certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS\,*D) and sports nutritionist (CISSN) certifications. Dr. Biscardi has taught at the college level for 10 years prior to joining the Barton community. She competed as a Division I athlete in college and remains active coaching track and field. Her research interests include studying sport and exercise from a social cognitive perspective.

Most recently\, Dr. Bauer served as the Dean of New Learning\, and Healthcare Administration Program Director as well as providing faculty support and education as an online learning expert. Dr. Bauer has recently taken on a role in the School of Business with a focus on the MBA program and graduate education. \nDr. Bauer is rooted in the philosophy that the best professors are those who stay current and relevant in their field. Practicing this ideology himself\, Dr. Bauer splits his time between Barton College and the business world\, by continuing to work in a number of roles in the healthcare industry\, including clinical practice and administration. He has a special interest in emergency management and disaster preparedness in healthcare and continues to work both domestically and internationally in these roles. He is a frequent speaker at national conferences in the area of healthcare preparedness\, emergency management\, and workforce development. \nIn addition to his roles at Barton College and in the healthcare industry\, Dr. Bauer continues to serve as a sworn law enforcement officer in eastern North Carolina. He is also an avid runner and triathlete and can often be found running marathons all over the East Coast.
