DESCRIPTION:Barton College students and professors set aside books\, and campus staff members and area alumni stepped away from desks\, for the annual “Day of Service and Engagement” on campus and in the Wilson community. \nBegun in 2008\, this campus initiative supports Barton’s vision for its graduates to be “well-prepared for life and for success in their chosen careers because they will possess a lifelong commitment to learning\, service\, and achievement.” This well-established program has become one of the most highly anticipated annual events for the campus community. \nThrough participation in these one-day projects\, Barton hopes to provide its students with a foundation for developing a deeper appreciation for service learning and a stronger sense of civic responsibility\, as well as meeting needs within the Wilson community. He completed his bachelor’s and master’s in textile chemistry and polymer science in Iran. In his late 20s\, Dr. Mohaddes moved to Australia to pursue his education in the same discipline at the Ph.D. level. He obtained his doctorate from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University)\, Melbourne\, Australia in 2015. Following his graduation\, Dr. Mohaddes started his first postdoctoral fellowship at RMIT School of Applied Chemistry focusing on the retrieval and characterization of cosmetic-based microplastics/microbeads from different origins i.e. fauna\, flora\, aqua\, and soil. Meanwhile\, Dr. Mohaddes enjoyed teaching chemistry courses and advising graduate researchers until he found his faith in moving to the US. He started his second post-doctoral fellowship at NC State University in 2018. At NC State\, Dr. Mohaddes led different research projects on metal oxide gas sensors\, microfabrication of 3D stackable thermoelectric generators (TEGs)\, fabrication and characterization of flexible TEGs\, development of porous elastomers with ultra-high and ultra-low thermal conductivity for energy harvesting applications. Dr. Mohaddes joined Barton College in the capacity of Assistant Professor of Chemistry in August 2023. \nSome of his areas of interest are spectroscopy\, chemical synthesis & functionalization\, pharmaceutical chemistry\, bio-composites\, and materials science & engineering. \nIn his spare time\, Dr. Mohaddes enjoys swimming\, playing chess\, traveling\, playing the piano and guitar\, and tasting new foods with family and friends.

SUMMARY:Mac McClure & Marisa Martins Perform Granados’ ‘Los Majos Enamorados’
DESCRIPTION:The Barton College / Wilson Symphony Orchestra is excited to announce the performance of Enrique Granados’ “Los Majos Enamorados” (the young lovers) on Sunday\, October 20\, at 3 p.m. in Howard Chapel. \nThe program will feature American-Spanish pianist Mac McClure (a native of Wilson) and Argentine-Spanish mezzo-soprano Marisa Martins. The Martins-McClure duo have lived in Barcelona\, Spain\, for more than 25 years\, where they have worked and helped to cultivate the culture and music life in that region. \nTickets are $20 per person and are available for purchase online at https://www.barton.edu/cultural-arts/symphony/tickets/ \nMcClure shares that an important part of Enrique Granados’ work has been inspired by the art of Francisco de Goya. Granados’ attraction towards life and the art of Goya emerged while Spain was seeking to find its artistic place in Europe\, which was much more advanced and developed at the turn of the 20th century. The bohemian character of the majo and maja\, and Goya captivated Granados. McClure asks the audience to imagine the majo — his layers of lace\, velvet waistcoat\, silk stockings\, his hat and his knife\, which he conceals in his hatband. Then envision la maja — sassy and streetwise\, holding low-class jobs in service as a maid\, or selling goods\, and usually hiding a knife under her skirt. \n“The composer Granados was fascinated by the rich visual detail of Goya’s paintings\, giving his music a sensuality through vocal melodic lines full of ornamentation\,” McClure adds. “The music of Scarlatti\, a teacher in the Spanish court\, is also reflected in the music of the piano suite “Goyescas” and the tonadillas. Ornamentation\, trills\, and mordents\, give a gallant air of romance to his composition.” \n“Los Majos Enamorados (the young lovers)\, consists of three selections in the “Goyescas” piano suite. The Requiebros\, Fandango del Candil\, and the maiden and the nightingale. The suite showcases a collection of tonadillas in the old style\, along with some of the Canciones amatorias\, and also love songs in Catalan. \nThroughout his life\, Granados wrote about love\, passion\, and death. This program is intended to provide a broader vision of the creative and sensual world of Enrique Granados. \nAbout Mac McClure —\nAn internationally acclaimed pianist\, McClure is recognized for his profound and in-depth knowledge of Spanish music. In the words of Xavier Montsalvatge\, “Mac knows my music just as well if not better than me\, and is an excellent performer of Falla\, Mompou\, and Granados\, and is one of the most outstanding protégés of the Marshall Academy.” McClure has recorded more than 40 CDs among these recordings\, the world premier recording for the songs by Albeniz and the first recording for the complete version of the Granados quintet\, as well as the complete songs (2 CDs) and 3 CDs of piano music by Frederic Mompou. He studied at the Marshall Academy in Barcelona with Carlota Garriga. He also studied for nine years with Alicia de Larrocha. And\, McClure has studied in detail with the following composers\, learning and performing their music: Xavier Montsalvatge\, Joaquin Nin-Cumell\, Carlos Surinach\, Ricardo Llorca\, Miquel Ortega\, and Carlota Garriga. From 2011-2014\, McClure served as director of the National Conservatory of Music\, a part of the National University of Colombia in Bogota. McClure currently serves as associate professor and director of the graduate keyboard studies program at the National University in Bogotá\, Colombia. \nAbout Marisa Martins —\nSpanish-Argentinean mezzo-soprano Martins began her studies in Buenos Aires\, where she was born\, and later continued in her studies at the Superior Conservatory in Barcelona.\nThe core of her repertoire lies in Monteverdi (Ottavia\, Proserpina\, Minerva)\, Mozart (Dorabella\, Annio\, Zerlina\, Idamante\, Tamiri) and Rossini (Zaida\, Doralice\, Roggiero)\, roles that she has sung in the Liceu Theatre in Barcelona\, La Zarzuela and Teatro Real in Madrid\, Theâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels\, Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro\, Mozart Festival in La Coruña\, and the Salzburger Festspiele\, among others. For the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birthday\, she made her debut at the Salzburg Festival with L’oca del Cairo and Lo Sposo Deluso. She performed this repertoire with conductors of the stature of René Jacobs\, Harry Bicket\, Giovanni Antonini\, Fabio Biondi\, Christopher Hogwood\, Alberto Zedda\, Ottavio Dantone\, and Attilio Cremonesi\, among others. Especially interested in the relationship between voice and movement\, she has worked in productions that combine music and modern dance in the theatres of Basel and Lucerna\, Hebbel-Theater in Berlin\, The Opera of Cologne\, Brooklyn Academy of Music of New York\, Early Music Festival in Innsbruck\, and for The Fischhouse in San Francisco\, working with prestigious choreographers such as Trisha Brown\, Joachim Schloemer\, and Charles Moulton. As a recitalist\, Martins feels a predilection for the French and Spanish repertory\, and she has given world premieres by Montsalvatge\, Frederic Mompou\, Miquel Ortega\, Carlota Garriga\, Ernest Borràs\, Enric Paloma\, David Padrós\, Josep M. Quadreny\, and Jordi Rossinyol. Among her recordings are the “Madrigali guerrieri ed amorosi” by Monteverdi for Harmonia Mundi under the direction of René Jacobs; for Lauda Música “El gran Burlador” (Diapason d’or: “Grandes Voix Humaines. A Raleigh native\, Dr. Barnes earned her BSW from NC State and her MSW from UNC-Chapel Hill. Her PhD in social work is from U-Texas at Austin.  Dr. Barnes’ areas of interest and work include housing and food insecurity\, restorative Justice\, poverty as trauma\, race and gender bias\, and LGBTQ rights.

Fecho\, M.F.A.: \nSusan Fecho specializes in multi-media printmaking\, surface designer\, and illustration with a M.F.A. from ECU\, and botanical illustrator certificate from NCBG. Her lifelong devotion to art includes over 40 years of teaching and working with art students in the United States and abroad. In addition\, she has pursued postgraduate studies at various institutions including Jan Van Eyck Academie\, Humboldt Field Research Institute\, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design\, Northern Illinois University\, NC Botanical Gardens and Penland School of Crafts. Fecho has exhibited nationally\, and internationally – and has received numerous awards\, grants\, and residencies. \nFecho\, born in Virginia and long-term resident of North Carolina\, is connected to “place” – she has a deep appreciation for the natural world of North Carolina\, her home. Fecho’s images have been accepted into several major collections: the Smithsonian Institution’s American Art Museum/National Portrait Gallery Library\, Washington\, D.C.; the Word and Image Department\, Victoria and Albert Museum\, London\, England; and the Museum of Women Artists\, Washington\, D.C. \nFecho’s academic contributions appear in scientific journals such as Nature Reviews Urology\, The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics\, The Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine\, The Journal of Urology\, and The Neuronal & Systems Mechanisms of Affective Touch & Therapeutic Tissue Manipulation Research (NeuronS_MATTR) Network. Fecho’s work also appeared in educational/inspirational such as Forward Future: Journal of Integrative Teaching International\, Kakalak: An Anthology of Carolina Poets\, New Art International: A Compendium of Recent Work\, Portrait of the Outer Banks: An Artist’s Sketch\, Our State Magazine\, and VIVA NOLA Magazine.

Basinger\, Ph.D.: \nDr. Mark Basinger came to Barton College in 2000 from Southeast Missouri State University where he completed a one-year teaching appointment in the Department of Biology.  His previous research focused on vascular plant inventories of natural areas and study of flooding and windstorm damage\, along with short-term recovery\, in two old-growth forests in southern Illinois.  Basinger has over 15 years of summer work experience with the Shawnee National Forest and has done a wide variety of ecological and floristic projects for the forest service.  He is considered an expert on the vascular plants of the eastern United States.  He teaches many of the introductory biology\, botany/environmental science\, and field biology courses at Barton including Principles of Biology I and II; Organismal Biology; Non-Vascular and Vascular Plants\, and Exploring the North Carolina Coast\, Coastal Plain\, and Mountains.

SUMMARY:Lighting of the Luminaries Christmas Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Beginning at 6 p.m.\, the campus and surrounding Wilson communities will come together to begin the festive celebration on Barton’s campus with the annual Blessing and Lighting of the Christmas Tree. With approximately 2\,500 luminaries lining 32 acres of the main campus\, students\, faculty\, staff\, alumni\, trustees\, friends of the College\, and members of the Wilson community will gather in front of the Aileen and Bill Parish Plaza\, outside Howard Chapel on center campus\, for the outdoor program. There will be brief remarks by Chaplain Alysun Skinner and Barton College President Douglas N. Searcy\, as well as music by the Barton College Choir. \nImmediately following the Blessing and Lighting of the Christmas Tree\, there will be “An Evening of Lessons and Carols” in Howard Chapel. The chapel service will feature the Barton College Choir led by Sherry Lee Allen\, choir conductor\, director of theatre\, and artist-in-residence for musical theatre. Dr. Ottinger earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Ball State University in 2015 as well as a master’s degree in exercise science with a concentration in sport performance in 2017. In 2022\, Dr. Ottinger earned his PhD in human performance from Concordia University of Chicago with specific attention to strength and conditioning and biomechanics. Charlie is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) and an American College of Sports Medicine certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-EP) and has over a decade of personal training and strength and conditioning experience. Charlie has competed in numerous sports\, including baseball\, football\, and elite powerlifting\, with mountain biking being his latest adventure. Charlie’s research interests include acute and chronic adaptations to resistance training variables as well as the biomechanical determinants of training quality. \nCharlie lives in Wendell with his wife and their numerous dogs and cats. They love all things outdoors and travel – especially if good food is involved.
