E.C. Winstead Society

In 2016, Barton College received the largest single gift in its history: $7.8 million from the Estate of Emerson Clarence “E.C.” Winstead. Mr. Winstead grew up in Wilson County and while he never attended Barton College, he understood the importance of this institution within the greater Wilson community. His support of Barton includes small gifts over the last two decades, and the establishment of the Laura B. and Emerson C. Winstead Endowed Chair for flute in the Barton College/Wilson Symphony Orchestra in 2008 in honor of his late wife, Laura Battle Winstead.

This transformational gift from Mr. Winstead’s Estate supported educational opportunities for students through financial aid with a first preference to students from North Carolina. It truly encompassed Mr. Winstead’s generous spirit, and his legacy has and continues to make an immediate impact on our students, faculty & staff, and programs here at the College.

Moving forward, the E.C. Winstead Society will remind us how philanthropy is a cornerstone of Barton College. The Legacy of E.C. Winstead embodies the Barton motto Habebunt Lumen Vitae – “They shall have the light of life” – and in return we must embody his spirit to give that life to the Barton community. We are forever grateful to the many individuals who have already chosen to help secure and sustain the future at Barton College.
