WILSON, N.C. — November 15, 2022 — Thanks to the generosity and planning of two alumnae, Barton College recently received estate gifts to support student scholarships.

Ms. Irene W. Lucas graduated in 1936 majoring in Social Studies. Ms. Lucas was a resident of Lucama, NC, and was a lifelong educator and teacher in the Wilson County School System for 38 years. Ms. Lucas had a passion to help see young men and women grow both inside and outside the classroom. Her estate provided $358,000. to establish the James C. Lucas Jr. Endowed Scholarship supporting students with demonstrated financial need from Eastern North Carolina.

Ms. Ann C. Baker graduated in 1965 majoring in Elementary Education. Ms. Baker taught in the schools for many years before retiring in 1985 from Nash County Public Schools. She was a faithful member of Winstead United Methodist Church and an active member of the All-Seasons Garden Club, where she served as treasurer for 10 years. Her estate provided $439,906 to establish the Jarvis Baker Family Endowed Scholarship supporting students enrolled in the School of Education.

Barton College is very grateful for the generosity of Ms. Lucas and Ms. Baker to help make it possible for deserving students to benefit from a Barton College education.
